Tag AI-generated people the way Amazon asks

Only tag images that actually need it

Amazon's rule covers photorealistic AI-generated people only. It does not apply to images of real people, even if you edited them with AI tools, and it does not apply to animated or clearly fictional characters. Tagging an image that does not need it can put a disclosure notice on a listing that should not have one.

Your images never leave this page. No upload, no account, no server. The tag is written by your own browser and the pixels are not touched, so the file you get back is your original with one metadata field added.

What the rule is, in plain terms

If a product image, lifestyle shot, video or A+ module contains a photorealistic person who was generated by AI, Amazon requires you to say so in the file itself. Not in the listing copy, not in a form: in the image's metadata, using the keyword contains-synthetic-performer in the dc:subject XMP field, before you upload.

The rule follows AI disclosure legislation in New York and California. That matters for how you plan around it: requirements that come from law tend to get stricter rather than quietly disappear, and Amazon has applied this across its worldwide stores rather than only where the laws apply.

The awkward part is the last mile. Amazon's instruction is to add the keyword using an IPTC-compatible metadata editor, which means finding, installing and learning a piece of desktop software in order to type twenty-nine characters into one field. For a seller with a handful of AI lifestyle shots that is a genuinely annoying afternoon, and it is the entire reason this page exists.

What this tool deliberately does not do

It does not strip metadata, and it will not help you remove an AI label. There is a small industry of tools built for that, and we think they are pointed the wrong way. Both Amazon and Etsy require AI use to be disclosed, in different ways, and undisclosed AI is a documented route to a removed listing. Building the tool that helps you hide it would be at odds with everything else on this site.

It also does not tag indiscriminately. The rule is narrower than it first appears, and putting a synthetic-performer notice on a listing that should not carry one is its own kind of mistake, so the scope is stated up front and the tool asks you to confirm it before it will accept a file.

What exactly does Amazon require?

For any image, video or A+ Content module containing photorealistic AI-generated people, Amazon requires the keyword contains-synthetic-performer in the dc:subject (XMP) metadata field, added before you upload. It applies across Amazon's worldwide stores. Amazon's own guidance is to use an IPTC-compatible metadata editor, which is what this tool replaces for the specific case of adding that one keyword.

Which images does the rule actually cover?

Only content featuring photorealistic AI-generated people. It does not apply to images of real people, even where AI tools were used to edit them, and it does not apply to animated or clearly fictional characters. If your product photography contains no people at all, the rule does not apply to it.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. There is no server and no account. Your browser reads the file, writes the metadata field, and hands it straight back. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.

Does this change my image quality?

No. The pixels are not touched and the image is never re-encoded. The tool inserts a metadata segment and copies the rest of the file through byte for byte, so the picture you get back is identical to the one you put in, plus one field.

Will it delete my existing metadata?

No, and this is deliberate. Existing EXIF, colour profiles and any keywords you already had are preserved, and the new keyword is appended to your existing keyword list rather than replacing it. If a file already carries the tag, it is left completely untouched.

How can I check the tag was really written?

Open the file in any metadata viewer and look at Subject or Keywords. ExifTool is the usual reference tool: exiftool -Subject yourfile.jpg will list the keywords, and you should see contains-synthetic-performer among them. This tool's output was tested against ExifTool during development.

My AI generator adds Content Credentials (C2PA). Does tagging affect them?

The C2PA manifest itself is carried through untouched, byte for byte. However, C2PA also stores a hash of the file, and adding any metadata changes the bytes that hash covers, so the credential's integrity check will report a mismatch afterwards. This is not specific to this tool: we tested the same file through ExifTool, the kind of IPTC editor Amazon points you to, and it produces exactly the same result. Any method of adding the required keyword has this effect. Amazon's requirement is the XMP keyword rather than C2PA, so it does not affect your compliance, but if preserving a verifiable Content Credential matters to you, add the keyword at generation time instead of afterwards.

Why did Amazon introduce this?

It follows AI disclosure legislation in New York and California covering synthetic performers in advertising. Because the requirement stems from law rather than from marketplace policy alone, it is unlikely to be relaxed, and it applies to listings in Amazon's stores worldwide rather than only in those states.

What file types does this support?

JPEG and PNG. Those are the two formats that carry XMP metadata reliably and cover essentially all Amazon listing imagery. If you have another format, convert it to JPEG first, then tag it.

The tag is the easy half of a compliant image

Metadata keeps you inside the AI disclosure rule. It does nothing about the rules that get images rejected at upload: pure white backgrounds, the 85% frame fill, filename structure, and the prohibitions on text and badges. Those are covered in our guide to Amazon's image requirements.
